A delicious and easy French toast casserole made with baked apples and cinnamon, perfect for lazy mornings and impressive brunches.

  • Total Time: 65 minutes
  • Yield: 8 servings 1x

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 loaf slightly stale bread, cubed
  • 2 apples (Granny Smith or Honeycrisp), peeled and chopped
  • 4 large eggs
  • 2 cups milk (or half-and-half for creaminess)
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 tablespoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg (optional)
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/4 cup brown sugar
  • Butter for greasing the dish

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. Butter an oven dish.
  3. In a large bowl, combine cubed bread and chopped apples; place in the prepared dish.
  4. In another bowl, whisk together eggs, milk, vanilla, cinnamon, nutmeg, and granulated sugar.
  5. Pour the custard over the bread and apples, pressing gently to ensure the bread is soaked.
  6. Sprinkle brown sugar mixed with cinnamon on top.
  7. Cover and refrigerate overnight (or for a couple of hours if in a hurry).
  8. Bake uncovered for 45-50 minutes, until puffed and golden.
  9. Allow to cool for 10 minutes before serving.

Notes

For a crispy top, consider cooking closer to an hour. If the top is browning too quickly, cover with foil.
