- 1 loaf slightly stale bread, cubed
- 2 apples (Granny Smith or Honeycrisp), peeled and chopped
- 4 large eggs
- 2 cups milk (or half-and-half for creaminess)
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1 tablespoon ground cinnamon
- 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg (optional)
- 1/4 cup granulated sugar
- 1/4 cup brown sugar
- Butter for greasing the dish
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
- Butter an oven dish.
- In a large bowl, combine cubed bread and chopped apples; place in the prepared dish.
- In another bowl, whisk together eggs, milk, vanilla, cinnamon, nutmeg, and granulated sugar.
- Pour the custard over the bread and apples, pressing gently to ensure the bread is soaked.
- Sprinkle brown sugar mixed with cinnamon on top.
- Cover and refrigerate overnight (or for a couple of hours if in a hurry).
- Bake uncovered for 45-50 minutes, until puffed and golden.
- Allow to cool for 10 minutes before serving.
Notes
For a crispy top, consider cooking closer to an hour. If the top is browning too quickly, cover with foil.
