A homemade version of the beloved Subway Italian Herb Cheese Bread, warm and chewy with flavorful herbs and melted cheese.

Ingredients

  • 4 cups bread flour (or all-purpose)
  • 1 packet instant yeast
  • 2 tablespoons sugar
  • 1 tablespoon salt
  • 1 cup warm milk (or dairy-free alternative)
  • 1/4 cup olive oil (or any neutral oil)
  • 1 cup warm water
  • 1 tablespoon oregano
  • 1 tablespoon basil
  • 1 tablespoon parsley
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
  • 1/2 cup shredded parmesan cheese (or cheddar)

Instructions

  1. Mix warm water, sugar, and yeast in a bowl and let it sit for about 5 minutes until foamy.
  2. Add in milk, olive oil, and Italian herbs, mixing well.
  3. Gradually add in flour until a slightly sticky dough forms.
  4. Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 10 minutes.
  5. Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover, and allow it to rise for at least 1 hour until doubled in size.
  6. Shape the dough into logs and place them on a baking sheet.
  7. Sprinkle with cheese and extra herbs on top.
  8. Bake at 375°F (190°C) for 20-22 minutes until golden brown.
  9. Cool slightly, then enjoy warm.

Notes

For a dairy-free version, replace milk with oat or soy milk and use a dairy-free cheese. Ensure to store unused bread properly to maintain freshness.
